Santa Claus – The Man and the Myth









Thoughts of toys on Christmas day mean one thing to children – Santa Claus is coming!  But how did Santa Claus come to be associated with Christmas?  The big man in red originated with St. Nicholas, born about 280 A.D. in what is now Turkey.  He was well known for his piety and kindness and as his popularity spread, he became known as the protector of children.  By the Renaissance, he was the most popular saint in Europe.  In 18th century America, reports of Dutch immigrants celebrating his birth and inclusion in a book by Washington Irving began the emergence of Sinter Klaas (as he was called in Dutch.)  By the 1840s, Santa Claus began showing up in shops as the popularity of Christmas shopping increased…. And the rest is history.
